Dr. Kokin specializes in three approaches to therapy, which she flexibly combines to suit her clients’ needs and goals: emotion-focused therapy (EFT), cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), and interpersonal therapy. There is a strong scientific evidence for the effectiveness of each of these approaches for different types of problems. However, the clinical research has demonstrated that the client-therapist relationship is the most important ingredient for making meaningful and lasting change in therapy. Dr. Kokin makes it a priority to build strong relationships with her clients and encourages clients to reflect on whether or not her approach is a good fit for them. Dr. Kokin works with clients primarily in English.
Dr. Jessica Kokin works with individuals with a wide variety of issues, including:
- Disordered eating/concerns with body image
- Relationship problems
- Coping/living with a family member with severe mental illness
- Identity problems
- Adjustment to life transitions
- Problems of everyday living
Dr. Kokin has a special interest in working with couples. She has extensive training in Emotionally-Focused Couples Therapy (EFT), including working directly with the founder of EFT, Dr. Sue Johnson, at the University of Ottawa. Dr. Johnson is the author of Hold Me Tight and a regular contributor over the past 25 years to the clinical research supporting the effectiveness of EFT. After completing her training with Dr. Johnson, Dr. Kokin developed her own broad expertise using EFT in her practice.
